Clarification on Footnotes:
Citing online sources
Generally, follow the same principals of footnotes to cite online sources. Refer to the author if possible and include the URL.

Citing online sources with no author
If there is no author, use either the article or website title to begin the citation. Be sure to use quotes for article titles and include the URL.

Here are some guidelines for choosing a category:

• Documentary if... you find a meaningful film clip, a lot of primary source photographs, a unique story worth telling, a lot of quotes from primary sources that you could read in a voice-over, you had a chance to interview an expert or person present during the historical event, or you have significant background with film editing and computer video programs.
• Exhibit if... you find lots of unique facts that speak for themselves, you have found many still images, cartoons, or documents.
• Paper if... your topic requires explanation, your thesis is better proved in writing, you found a lot of helpful secondary sources.
• Performance if... you found a unique story worth telling, your historical topic has a theatrical element like music or dance, or you have a strong theatrical background.
• Website if... your research uncovered a lot of tangential information that would be better described in multiple webpages, or you have experience with websites.

I chose this image to represent the violence and terror that the KKK used to control black people throughout the South, throughout the 19th and 20th century. The burning cross is one of the most iconic images associated with the Klan, and I was surprised to discover that it originated from the film Birth of a Nation (1921). KKK members thought the cross represented their Protestant Christian values (as they were anti-Catholicism as well), and was reminiscent of the Scottish tradition of burning a Celtic cross as a call to war.

The photo also shows the other iconic image of the KKK- the white hoods. This also served to strike fear and protect its members through making it difficult to know who was a member and who was not.
