NHD: Week of Dec 2-6
Do Now: Review last week's blog assignments on best practices for project types
Classwork:
- Continue writing your 1500 word final NHD paper, due WED DEC 4
- Peer share and peer edits of papers- swap with a classmate, read each other's papers, and give feedback
- Begin NHD Website (alternate projects, everyone but paper, performance, and documentary). Go to http://nhd.weebly.com and SIGN UP or LOG IN. Begin creating pages on the 5 stages.
- Continue working on annotating your bibliography. REMEMBER: An annotation has
- Summary of the article/document/chapter/etc
- Who wrote/published, when and where published, other info for citation
- Author/publisher qualifications for writing (non-biased? expert?)
- How it fits into your research (origin, development, etc- what you learned from it)
Clarification on Footnotes:
Citing online sources
Generally, follow the same principals of footnotes to cite online sources. Refer to the author if possible and include the URL.
18. Henry James, The Ambassadors (Rockville: Serenity: 2009), http://books.google.com.
19. Bhakti Satalkar, “Water Aerobics,” http://www.buzzle.com, (July 15, 2010).
Citing online sources with no author19. Bhakti Satalkar, “Water Aerobics,” http://www.buzzle.com, (July 15, 2010).
If there is no author, use either the article or website title to begin the citation. Be sure to use quotes for article titles and include the URL.
20. “Bad Strategy: At E3, Microsoft and Sony Put Nintendo on the Defense,” BNET, www.cbsnews.com/moneywatch, (June 14, 2010)
Homework: Email final paper to mirandagt2013@gmail.com AND goldfrancine205@gmail.com by 11:59pm on WED DEC 4, prepare 2 min pitch by MON DEC 9, and begin NHD project building (progress check) by FRI DEC 6

Here are some guidelines for choosing a category:
MORE ON PROJECT TYPES: http://nhdnh.weebly.com/creating-projects.html
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: http://nhdnh.weebly.com/annotated-bibliography.html
- Documentary if... you find a meaningful film clip, a lot of primary source photographs, a unique story worth telling, a lot of quotes from primary sources that you could read in a voice-over, you had a chance to interview an expert or person present during the historical event, or you have significant background with film editing and computer video programs.
- Exhibit if... you find lots of unique facts that speak for themselves, you have found many still images, cartoons, or documents.
- Paper if... your topic requires explanation, your thesis is better proved in writing, you found a lot of helpful secondary sources.
- Performance if... you found a unique story worth telling, your historical topic has a theatrical element like music or dance, or you have a strong theatrical background.
- Website if... your research uncovered a lot of tangential information that would be better described in multiple webpages, or you have experience with websites.

Stage 3 burning cross picture
Members of the Ku Klux Klan, wearing traditional white hoods and robes, stand back and watch with their arms crossed after burning a 15-foot cross at Tampa, Fla., Jan. 30, 1939. (AP Photo)
Retrieved from http://www.anorak.co.uk/ 342281/keyposts/the-story-of- the-klu-klux-klan-in-pictures- racism-civil-rights-and- murder.html/
I chose this image to represent the violence and terror that the KKK used to control black people throughout the South, throughout the 19th and 20th century. The burning cross is one of the most iconic images associated with the Klan, and I was surprised to discover that it originated from the film Birth of a Nation (1921). KKK members thought the cross represented their Protestant Christian values (as they were anti-Catholicism as well), and was reminiscent of the Scottish tradition of burning a Celtic cross as a call to war.
The photo also shows the other iconic image of the KKK- the white hoods. This also served to strike fear and protect its members through making it difficult to know who was a member and who was not.

Do Now: Open your drive.google.com and easybib.com
Classwork Periods 1, 5, 6 and 2(that completed resumes):
- Find TWO primary sources about your RIGHT being fought for or taken away. This is the main idea, or turning point, in your project. For example, Executive Order 9066 is the turning point for Japanese Internment, as that was the moment rights were taken away. Passage of the 15th Amendment would be the moment the Right to Vote was given to African American men (though Jim Crow/Black codes continued to prohibit this right for many years).
- Analyze the sources using THIS WORKSHEET What do you learn about your topic from teh source?
- CITE and ANNOTATE the sources using easybib.com

NHD 5 Stages Paper
Rights
and Responsibilities Title
THESIS/INTRO: This
is where you should put your thesis statement and introductory paragraph. This
introduces the reader to your topic, and gives a brief summary of what you plan
to present. Make sure you have clear argument- what you plan to prove-
with your thesis statement.
ORIGIN: This is your
paragraph on the origin of your topic. Write about the time and place in which
the right or responsibility first began. How did the story start? What
important connections did you make about how your topic began? For example,
what important events or “watershed moments” impacted your topic? Was it born
out of another movement (like women’s suffrage and abolition)? Make sure you
reference your sources, either as a footnote or within the paper. According to
Ms. Thompson, this is the correct way to write an academic paper (conhigh2016.blogspot.com).
DEVELOPMENT: This is
your development. What were the first years like as people began to demand
their right, or take on certain responsibilities? Was there a movement that
grew around demanding their rights? Was there opposition to your topic?
How did both sides of the issue interact? Make sure you reference your sources.
TURNING POINT: This
is describing the right and/or responsibilities. This is the point in which
most of the public is aware there is a problem, and people are actively working
to change the problem. You may write several paragraphs about this, as it is
the bulk of your research. Make sure you use and cite your sources.
SHORT TERM IMPACT:
Write about how your right or responsibility immediately changed the world- for
better or worse. What changed socially,
economically, or politically because of your right/responsibility? This is what
happened because of your topic right after the turning point- first ten years or
so. Cite your sources.
LONG TERM IMPACT-
Determine how we are still feeling the effects of your topic. Make sure you
reference social, economic and political impact, as needed. USE AND CITE YOUR
SOURCES
CONCLUSION. Give a
brief summary of what you proved with your research.
Fast Finishers: Work on your Wordplay assignment for Señor Todd.
